The Story: The company was founded in 1992 by Robert Gifford, who previously headed research and development for Great Plains Software. Under his leadership the Great Plains Accounting and Dynamics, two highly popular accounting software systems in the for-profit industry, was created and eventually sold to Microsoft for over one billion dollars.  Icon Systems’ software is currently used by thousands of churches globally.  Since its founding, Icon Systems has become legendary for its commitment to high-quality products as well as outstanding service and support for church software.

What is does: Icon CMO takes on a lot of goals and certainly attempts to be a “one stop shop”. As an online church software IconCMO was designed to handle large ministries.  From membership to full blown web based accounting.  Originally an accounting software company, the features and emphasis seem to still be on accounting.  Here are some of the features.

Price: $300+ per year for a small church, prices go up to $700/year for medium church. Large churches need to call for pricing

Typical Customer: Medium sized churches

Number of Churches: 3500

Purchase Model: As a web based program ICON CMO is leased by the customer, and there appear to be no setup fees.  The monthly price of any of the online church software modules usually is based on the number of people the church is tracking, with smaller churches paying less.  ICON CMO seems to be relatively affordable, starting at $30/month for small churches (less than 100).  ICON CMO also provides a payroll service which they sell as an add on service.

Pros: The great thing about ICON CMO online church software is that it is web based, and easy to access from any computer.

Cons: Not too many cons at first glance with ICON CMO except for complexity.  It might be beyond the scope of a volunteer secretary, although, if a church is able to pay the price, they probably have a professional secretary.

I applaud the website’s authors for putting together one website which gives a quick snap shot of different companies.

As an employee of Icon Systems which develops IconCMO, I wanted to correct a few things from above. IconCMO was not originally designed as an accounting system. In fact the accounting module was added last after membership, groups, talents, attendance, and contributions.

While the founder has a strong accounting background in the past working for Great Plains software – he started Icon Systems for churches that needed a membership and contribution software – first. Also, the accounting module is fund based which is required by FASB for all church sizes. Many popular programs do not do this – even the ones marketed as church accounting software that are found on this site and others.

Additionally, IconCMO is used by any size church (majority being smaller to medium) because of it’s affordability – you get your biggest bang for your buck with IconCMO. Most church software packages do not include accounting or payroll at all and are 3 – 10 times the amount of IconCMO’s lowest level pricing ($330.00/year) compared to other packages ($990 – $3,000+). Many companies steer you to an accounting system that is not designed with the purpose of churches in mind and often need work-around(s) to make it work for their accounting – an example of this is one of the most popular accounting packages used by churches.

With developing a package like this, Icon Systems concentrates on making IconCMO’s features set as easy to use as possible for even the most novice volunteer and couples that with some of the most advanced features that you find in the very very expensive packages.

Also the price includes support which many charge extra for.

Does anyone know how to get the information out of Icon to move it to another system? I think they call it ‘EX-port’?
